About the Images

I am a radiologist and self-taught photographer drawn from the darkened reading room towards a world suffused with natural light.

My current work concentrates on the peculiar beauty of coastal southern New Jersey; its interior pine barrens, flora, and fauna; and the overlooked rural communities of the Delaware Bay. I am particularly interested in the ambiguous quality of everyday objects and structures encountered at the seaside between twilight and dawn, and the tension between the untamed wetlands and human expectations of permanence and control. I have come to think of the images as "melancholigraphs".

I create my own limited edition giclee prints up to 24" x 30" using archival pigmented inks. You may choose from Epson Exhibition Fiber Paper (luster finish, and particularly fine for monochrome images) or Hahnemuhle Photo Rag (matte) Paper. I have been very pleased with the ethereal look of recent prints I have made using Bizan, a traditional Japanese Washi invividually handmade at the Awagami mill in Tokushima. The paper is made from environmentally friendly Kozo (mulberry) and Hemp fibers, yielding naturally deckled edges and a truly unique texture.

A new gallery, Palladium Prints, contains images selected for contact prints made from digital negatives and hand-coated Archer Platine paper. This process, sometimes referred to as platinum or platinum-palladium printing, yields a soft ethereal image with a wide tonal range in the highlights. Because the platinum or palladium precipitates within the substance of the paper, the prints are truly archival. These 8" x 10" prints are limited to editions of only 10, and are archivally matted to 16" x 20".

Selected limited edition prints are available exclusively for purchase through The Artful Home.
